Rendition As Books Désirée

The stunning, massively bestselling story of Napoleon's first fiancé

First published in 1953, this riveting true-life tale comes to life in diary form, giving readers an inside glimpse at the young Napoleon and his family. Désirée is enchanted by the young officer, and he asks her to marry him. But he must leave for Paris, where he meets his eventual wife Josephine. A heartbroken Désirée is unsure she'll ever find anyone again. A love story, but so much more, Désirée is the tale of a simple merchant's daughter who ends up with a kind of royalty she never expected: an unforgettable story just waiting to be reborn.

Critique Regarding Books Désirée
hardcover library book - historical novel read in the late 70s.

Another one of my go-to book recommendations, especially for people who love historical fiction, France or Napoleon. Absolutely stunning in it's wealth of details, it has imagery and situations so scandalous it is difficult to believe it was written in 1951.

I enjoyed this book as a child, but trying to read it now only disappointed me. I didn't find in it the same magic that made it such a hit at the time. Now it feels very confused to me, with characters behaving in inconsistent ways and the plot jumping places and times and sometimes being practically incoherent. Selinko knew her history, but many times she focuses on details that are merely gossip, and are irrelevant in the bigger scheme of things. On the other hand, she takes it for granted

I got this book from the library for my mother who enjoys these historical romance novels but I also ended up reading it. For those of you who can read German, it's better to check out the original version of the book, though I have no complains about this translation, I'm sure that is even better. This is written in diary format from Désirée's (Bernardine Eugénie Désirée Clary, who later becomes the Queen of Sweden and Norway) POV. Here's a picture of her: She is one-time fiancée of Napoleon

A really nice read for lovers of historical fiction. Yes, this is what "Désirée" is: It teaches you something about history, but there are also many fictional relations and details. I liked it mainly for two reasons: because I learned a new perspective of this part of the European history and because it was told from the view of a woman who didn't care much about politics and became involved in it anyway. I sympathized with the main character and with her struggles. Last year, I read another

Excellent older book by Annemarie Selinko about the life of Eugenie Desiree Clary, a silk merchant's daughter, who was the first love of Napoleon Bonaparte. She later married Jean Baptiste Bernadotte who became the King of Sweden. Their descendants rule Sweden today.I read this book years ago and am rereading it again. The only criticism I have is that the book becomes bogged down at times with the information about Napoleon's campaigns and the political landscape of the time. Important

Désirée = Desiree, Annemarie SelinkoEugénie Bernardine Désirée Clary (8 November 1777 17 December 1860), in Swedish officially Eugenia Bernhardina Desideria, was Queen of Sweden and Norway as the consort of King Charles XIV John (a former French General and founder of the House of Bernadotte), mother of Oscar I, and one-time fiancée of Napoleon Bonaparte. She officially changed her name there to Desideria, which she did not use herself.تاریخ نخستین خوانش: ماه نوامبر سال 2005 میلادیعنوان: دزیره
